Penn State Puts Alibre Design In Wide Distribution to Thousands of Students and Faculty

RICHARDSON, Texas--March 31, 2003--The Penn State School for Engineering Design, Technology and Professional Programs in the College of Engineering has moved beyond limited classroom use of Alibre Design, Alibre's low-cost CAD application for 3D parametric solid modeling. Penn State is promoting the application to its engineering community and made it available to more than 7,000 engineering students, faculty and staff.

In the first days since the program was announced, hundreds of Penn State students and faculty have downloaded Alibre Design. The program is possible through a software grant made by Alibre in March 2002. Last year's grant enabled Penn State and the international PRESTIGE consortium of engineering schools to use Alibre Design in 3D design and online collaboration projects by student teams.

"We are pleased to bring the powerful, mid-range, 3D CAD of Alibre Design now to the entire Penn State community--even for use on their personal computers at home," said Richard Devon, associate professor of engineering design. "After using Alibre Design in the PRESTIGE consortium over the past year, we've seen how easy it is to learn and use. Our students' educations will benefit from this convenient access to advanced 3D parametric solid modeling."

"We appreciate Penn State's choice of Alibre Design to serve its students and faculty," said Greg Milliken, vice president of sales and marketing for Alibre. "Penn State's program is a great example of Alibre's commitment to engineering education. Our objective is to make it possible for every student to become proficient with state-of-the-art 3D design technology. As students move out into industry, they'll not only have valuable 3D CAD experience, they'll also be familiar with a product that is accessible by everyone--no matter what career path they choose or size of company they join."

Penn State University has one of the nation's leading engineering schools with an undergraduate program ranked fourteenth and a graduate program ranked eighth among public universities by recent reports from U.S. News & World Report.1

Alibre redefines professional solid modeling with the low-cost Alibre Design application for 3D parametric solid modeling. Alibre Design lets designers, engineers and their associates create 3D models and 2D associative drawings, and its integrated online tools let users share and edit product designs from different CAD applications, and collaborate in real time using precise design data. These tools also allow for advanced support and training directly from the online Alibre Assistant. Additionally, the application's support for open data standards such as STEP provides a CAD-neutral environment. Founded in 1997, Alibre Inc. is privately funded and based in Richardson, Texas.
