What's new

28.1 Contents - Targeted end of May

Will the new 3d threads feature be only limited to Atom3d or will it roll out to the other versions as well? I currently have Atom3d but interested in upgrading to design pro. The 3d threads feature has been holding me back for quite a while.
I think you will find all features included in Atom are also in Pro and Expert.

With the larger note boxes in the dimension windows, can the above and below text be centred on the main text rather than left justified?
I don't need to make drawings for any production but it is beyond sad that the dimension text issue has not been figured out by now. Even on my own drawings I would like the dimension text to be centered when adding notations to them.

After watching @Joseph_L 's video on the new fillet tool I think there is one thing missing - a full round fillet. That has been previously discussed on the forum and a script written that fully rounds between two parallel surfaces.

In this simple example the sides of the model on the Left are parallel while the sides of the model on the Right are drafted at 2 deg.
As can be seen the fillet on the Right cannot fully round between the sides, it gets pointy at the top and incomplete at the bottom. A full round fillet option would allow for this case.

Someone said it was a kernel limitation. Were the fillet overhaul from a kernel update? If so then full round fillet should be possible, more work but possible.

Perhaps I am missing something but is there a list of which of these new features are available in Atom 3D? I have watched the videos and when I look closer they are using Design, not Atom. Some of the things look neat but if they do not work in Atom 3D they are far less useful.

You're getting Threads for 3D printing.
Worth it's weight in gold for the £200 ish starter package users.
I'm amazed you get it. ;):)

If threads is the only thing I am getting it is questionable if it is worth it. Accurate threads are not a big deal for me. I have used the cosmetic threads a few times and it is a pain but it is not worth the money for "ME" . Something like gear mesh or cam follow would be something that I could really use.

I am not a programmer but other discussions have indicated that gear mesh and cam follow are fairly easy to program. Free Cad seems to have accomplished it with volunteers. Granted there are also a lot of negatives with Free Cad.

My original question of what changes are available in Atom 3D has not really been answered. The only feature added to Atom seems to be threads so it becomes a question of is that one feature worth $50.

It's just a point release. Not Major version release. That being said. Atom3d is pretty powerful CAD for the price. Great for hobbyist/makers and 3d printing enthusiasts.

I can't give a definitive list, but from looking through the videos, I'd expect the majority of the enhancements to be available in Atom3D. For example we wouldn't want to have to maintain separate fillet tools for different product levels.

Updates to ACIS kernel and to file translators will apply to all versions. Also all bug fixes.

Obviously Atom3D won't get the Sheet Metal or PDM related things, or re-ordering of configurations.

I've asked that the v28.1 release notes be updated to indicate where features are limited to specific versions. Hopefully that will be done fairly soon. If you are particularly interested in certain features - please advise and I can test those in a pre-release build.
