My most ambitious print yet. Interestingly it was printed entirely without supports; I'm pleased about that as it shows what the bot is capable of. The finish is very good considering the relatively coarse settings I used. I may make another one in the future with finer settings and slower feeds. I got the model on Thingiverse here.

Material: ABS
Slicer: Makerware Desktop
Layer height: 0.2
Feed (all): 50
Shells: 1
Infill: 10%

Is the HIPS much more expensive than ABS? I've heard that it shrinks much less than ABS, possibly not at all and that HIPS is supposed to be good for large footprint projects where ABS tends to warp on the bed.

Hi Sebastion, These are very nice looking parts. What printer are you using?
I have a Flashforge Creator X. Flashforge have since discontinued this model and replaced it with the Creator Pro. The newer model has front and top covers and an updated mobo. Otherwise they are the same.

ABS, HIPS and PLA all cost the same over here, approx R300 per kg. I don't know if it shrinks less (never actually checked) but its nice to print with and gives a nice finish. Hard though.

Thanks, Zortrax (my printer) will be supplying HIPS soon and I'm planning to try it out for some large prints that ABS has trouble with.

Is that bracket strong enough? What's the density? To what material can I compare that to?

Strong enough? It'll do for a for a short while til you can get a proper replacement. Certainly not strong enough for sustained long term use.

Nice! Yoda was the first test model when I had a 3D Touch three years ago :)
Thanks. I'm a huge Star Wars fan so I had to do it. TIE Fighter Advanced up next...

Its a real pity I can't upload the stuff I do for clients. Been printing a lot for the medical and electronics industries lately. Very exciting stuff!!

A casing I made for a electronics enthusiast. Has all sorts of electronic doodads inside. Casing designed and printed by yours truly. ABS. 0.1mm layer height.

That's very cool. :D

Btw, did you ever get to try HIPS?

Yes, I tried Zortrax's HIPS but the raft is almost impossible to remove so I've done no more prints with it until Zortrax releases a new version of the slicer and/or firmware. That's due soon, so they say. In the meantime I bought an unapproved 3rd party add-on that lets me change temperature on the fly so that non-Zortrax filaments (like PLA, wood, etc.) can be used.

BTW, the same guy that designed the transmission also did the 4-cylinder engine, along with moving pistons and cams. He uses a 12 VDC battery in the alternator housing to drive the engine, which in turn can be used to drive the transmission. The guy who did the design knows his stuff - all of the parts printed out with minimal issues, unlike almost all of the other mechanical designs I've gotten from Thingiverse.

Here is a cell phone stand I made for my Galaxy S4. Designed in GD, printed in ABS on my FFCX.

This is the part as it came off the printer:
