What's new

3D to 2D

By the way, there wouldn't normally be bend centre lines. A bend allowance needs to be applied based on material type and thickness. However I think the size of the butterfly valve possibly prohibits the use of a bending machine. You may need a press and a machined-to-shape former pair.

Yes, I'm well aware of bend radius's and material differences when bending, but you do need a centre line when manually bending using an acute angle die set on a press brake.

Bend centers are applied to the 2D drawing not the 3D model.

Do you know what the bend radius is going to be based on the die set being used to form the butterfly valve? I measured 2 different sizes.
And you need to fully define the sketches of your part, having the sketch constrained to the Origin also helps.

I took a shot at using .063 for the bend radius and created a STEP file of the flat part and a PDF of a drawing for you. If the bend radius is different let me know.
I used the default K-factor, however, what the K-factor will be for the die set used would be nice to know for accuracy. But that means running some samples and taking measurements, etc.

You may be right, a stamping die set seems to be in order then it's one hit and done. Although with a narrow die set it could be done without a stamping set up. It would need a guide of sorts to hold in relative to the dies though.

This project is a one off... maybe two, if we screw up the first one. We are manually bending this on a hydraulic press by eye. I'm not looking for thousands of an inch accuracy. It's a damper in an sch10 pipe for an exhaust brake. The pipe is out of round by 10 thou. I'm going to have to dress up the outside surface by hand to seal as best as possible and even that doesn't really matter (within reason) as it has a .375" hole to control back pressure to the turbo. The hat channel part gets bolted down on a machined shaft. I apologize if my modeling skills leave a little to be desired. I'm still learning how this program works and I know I'm hacking things as work arounds, but I'm getting better... slowly! Anyways, I've fixed up the radius's, but the constraints I'm still learning. I tried to edit the DXF to add bend lines, but my version of the software will not allow it. I appreciate all the advice, I just need some bend lines drawn on the attached file. If Harold or someone else could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

I have done this sort of thing with 3D printed tooling and a press. Seems that it might be better to form the offset and then machine the OD after?

As I noted before, bend lines are added to the 2D drawing, not the 3D model. If you download the PDF file I uploaded the bend lines are added and dimensioned in the flat view of the part. I updated the bend radius to your latest.

Which version of Atom 3D do you have, v29 or previous? Can Atom 3D open 2D drawings from Pro or Expert?

Just curious if you corrected any of the sketch issues before you created the STEP and DXF files.
From the sizes of the bend regions it appears not to have been done and could have an effect on the formed part final dimensions.:confused:

It will be interesting to see how the part forms up.

No I did not modify anything. I converted the part file to a sheet metal file and unbent. then exported to a step file and converted Step to DXF. The dimensions shown would have been generated from the model "unbend" feature. I can check and let you know.

I have V.28. Yes,
Never mind, the last STEP and PDF files I uploaded are from the latest that @AlbertafFlyer uploaded and so have the latest bend radii and material thickness.

I can open a 2D dxf, but I can't edit it. I just need a DXF drawing showing the bend lines so my laser guy can just upload it and cut it. He only works in 2D DXF.

The reason I would like the bend lines in the DXF file (which I can't do because my version won't let me edit Harold's DXF file) is the laser guy can make a small nick where the bend lines are to help with lining up.
