Change in behaviour of inside fillet and chamfer in V29 [Resolved]

Inside fillets and chamfers don't seem to work like they did in previous versions. I get the red apply button when I select an inside edge on both fillet and chamfer functions.

A red apply button means "we will make the feature for you, but it is going to fail". We test it before you press apply. If you are seeing this, but it is in fact not failing when you press apply, let us know. Likely your fillet is not a good side for the surrounding geometry.

Thank you for the quick reply.

It does this when the fillet and chamfer size is the default setting of 0.5 mm. I have performed this exact same operation hundreds of times in previous versions and I am very familiar with what occurs when the requested dimension is too large. Screen capture of error message attached.

As the error message says - there is a non-manifold edge

To fix it I suggest alter your extrusion for the round spigot to also extend internally by say 0.1mm

I also am seeing the non-manifold edge here. Here is a quick model I did that has a working fillet. Since the extruded circle diameter is the same as the hole dimeter, the extrusion and the hole share a single edge that is of infinitely thin thickness, which can computationally break downstream features. I altered the circle diameter by 0.001 mm just so the intersection was no longer infinitely thin, and the fillet feature worked out. Please see the attached. Out of curiosity, I made a similar part in V27 to test fillet capability, but I ran into the same issue. If you happen to have an example where a fillet did work in V28, but will not work on the same geometry in V29, I would be very interested in looking at this.

Let me know if this helps.

Ok, I can get how that is an issue and my claim that I had done this many times was false. I didn't realize that this would be an issue and thank you for the fix. I'll be more mindful not to create this situation in the future.

We are always happy to help and I'm glad you asked! Please come again if we can help more.

Alibre is my favorite program! I'm retired. When I left the company where I used it for my work I took it with me (with their consent) because I was the only one that knew how to use it. Currently I use it for my woodworking designs and 3D printing projects. These have included many household convenience items, woodworking fixtures, a couple of different equatorial mounts for my Seestar S50 telescope and other accessories. I love the ability to have an idea, visualize it in Alibre and materialize it with my 3D printers (I have several). One feature that I would like to see is the ability to import STL files. When compared to Fusion 360 the current solutions are impossibly slow and error prone.

The company’s primary business is/was software that performs evidentiary recording of surveillance video. It was a labor of love primarily designed to meet the requirements of a major government entity. Hardware development was a sideline that I suspect was only marginally profitable, if that. When I retired in 2018 the hardware development activity was winding down. Bigger player’s dominated the market and our volumes were quite small. The owner was streamlining operations to core competencies. Hence the need for hardware development went away. Currently the owner is approaching 80 and shutting down the business.
