Well, makes me wonder if Alibre should be looking at not using STEP as its file format.

The proposed format is probably a collection of data, textures and feature definition. Also compressed so it can be streamed in real time.

STEP is far beyond that, with a definition in almost every area of engineering (documents, spreadsheets, PDM, CAD etc).

My guess is that these two can live in a collaborative way, where STEP is the industry standard and "this one" the general standard - for gaming, visualisation and etc. Today there are numerous of different formats.

The problem to solve is a standard for feature definition (history of a model). It's funny to see that Dassault is one of the "members" in this group, considering that they are extremely careful about letting other CAD-systems reading their files.

Hi Scott,

It seems to me that this format is like a 3D pdf. Probably something like Model Press or Spin Fire.

Judging by by the companies that will participate, I think its more graphicall than engineering (as Mibe said).

I'll try to find the article, but not along I read that STP was the newest and probably definitive neutral format, and that it would eventually replace IGS (no mention of VDA).

NOTE: Raúl Reynoso, if you read this, I hope you can post the article for us.

About article

Hello Gaspar,

I am still searching for the article, but the fact that this companies doesn't heard about STEP doesn't surprised me, we have to look that many other branches of CAD aren't related to it, like Architectural, GIS, even the styling professionals, and not to mention the non-CAD related. Besides I will change the question to "Haven't heard of VRML?" For many years the VRML format was used for web-streaming and 3D communication, but about 4 years ago the free viewers disappeared.

Also we found that in the MCAD community, not many persons know the benefits of using STEP. F.I. the people dedicated to CAM mostly uses the IGES instead ( at least in México ).

Just my $0.02
