Import problem

I have loaded a STEP file. I activate sketch and choose a face. Project to sketch. Deactivate sketch. Extrude sketch. Bore extrudes but not the face. I cannot select the bore to delete it. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Another friend tried the same thing and he was able to extrude the face. I am using Atom3D.

Hi Gordon, can you upload the STEP file here, then we can better understand what your problem is and hopefully help.

My guess is a bad import. Try different import settings and use 'check part' when importing.

I have tried a couple of different formats including 2D and a couple of different gears 30 tooth and 60 tooth.

Check:

Hi Gordon,

I can see and reproduce your problem with: Project To Sketch

RushGears_AP214_Y4830-error1.png

With Alibre Design you can use "Direct Edit -> Move Face", and it works well:

I can offer a workaround for Atom3D:

Import the STEP file -> Save -> Export again, but this time use STEP AP 242.
Close.
Now Import/Open the STEP AP242 file.
Now your problem is "gone" and you can use: Project to Sketch and then Extrude:

I have given up on getting this to work. I realized that I had to make other changes like bore and hub size and I could not modify them. I downloaded a DXF file and loaded it into my old 2D cad and erased everything except the gear face. I then loaded it into Alibre, copied it and then pasted it into a new part. The problem is that it pastes it out in space some place. Since it is not fully defined I have not figured out how to move everything to the origin.

You should be able to use extrude cut to increase bore diameter, or to reduce hub diameter.

Extrude boss to reduce bore diameter or increase hub diameter.

Likewise boss to increase hub length or cut to reduce it.

What sizes do you need...?

Make your own sketches! Simple circles for most stuff. Use 'project to sketch' if you need to replicate more complex existing geometry.

Just build on top of the existing part.

Gordon,

Just an example - the only tricky things are
1. Follow Ralf's tip about export & re-import
2. Done select 'maintain association' with project to sketch of the gear profile (something odd in there messes up the resulting extrusion if you do).

The main point is to show that you don't need access to the original features to modify things.
