Is the a way to copy/reference plane/axis from a different part?

Just a little update in case anyone stumbles upon this thread -- I have been getting more done with the scanner and then using the result with Alibre.

I've figured out a workflow that lets me to convert the STL mesh created by the scanner into a SAT surface file of the same mesh. As part of the translation process, I align and position the mesh to square it up to reference orintations.

Working with surfaces within the part, versus trying to work across parts works much better.

You might try reducing the poly count of that by a factor of 100 and check. My bet is you don't loose enough detail too justify the computation required for the higher poly count. Especially true of it is determined by deviation instead of poly size.

I tried a few quick tests using a lower poly-count, but the results I got would butter (melt) the important corners. It could be I wasn't using my tools correctly, but for my purposes, lopping off most of the phone and some reduction was enough. As you said, it ideally should be by deviation, not poly size.

I use MoI3d for the same purpose. From the API you can script the process. Instant meshes does retopo and is also scriptable. I have projects that use them all including Rhino/grasshopper scripts. I need SAT files (from Dynamo and Autodesk apps) converted for my custom apps that use Assimp-net which doesnt support SAT import/export. If you’re looking for a more automated solution there are many options.
