Sheet Metal Question

How does one calculate the amount of tons required to bend a piece of sheet metal? How about punching and shearing?

I know this is a bit off topic, however, I am wrestling with how I should make a U shaped part with two holes in it. One way is to create a sheet metal part with the holes punched and the other is to make an assembly of three parts with the holes drilled. Either way, the strip of metal has to be either cut or sheared. I need to know the tons required so I know the equipment can handle it.

The 'on topic' part of this is that I would model either way in Alibre!

Thanks in advance,
Bill

This sounds like a simple strength of materials problem. It will depend upon the metal type, thickness, and length of cut or bend. Any strength of Materials textbook or the Machinery Handbook will show you how to calculate it.
