Spurious Alibre forum members?

Following the web links for the majority of recent recruits to this forum leads to an assortment of commercial search/medicine supply/porn sites. Have the links been hacked? Or are they the reason for the 'membership'?

Strange indeed. If they are legit members whose links have been hacked, one wonders why other members' links have been spared? My guess is that those 'members' were created by a spambot of sorts.

It's probably best not to click the links, it'll generate traffic from this site to those dodgy sites and might just encourage them (hovering your cursor over the links shows you where they go).

Those are almost certainly throw-away accounts created by people looking to increase the total number of links to their website. Google ranks pages based on the number of links to the page, and Google (and their search customers like Yahoo) has largely become the interface to the Internet for many people. So scum will resort to just about anything in order to increase their link count.

Blech!

Can you list some specific threads?

I typically don't follow links for just that reason. If you point us to something specific, the moderators can remove it.

Thanks,

Scott,

I think they are referring to the Memberlist (each member has an option of linking to a website as part of his profile). This was the complaint I had awhile back (at that time some were removed). One of the Administrators will have to remove those members again.

Hi Scott,
Go to the member list, and sort the list by most recent members. Many of the links to the most recent "member's" websites are links to spam and porno.

(Got caught typing slow again...really have to get my wife to teach me how to type faster :) )

I think it's important, because we shouldn't feel inhibited about visiting other members websites.

Ah, I see what you mean. And thanks for using spurious; I had to look that one up.

I'll notify our administrators about the members and have them removed as soon as possible. I think it is time to better control who has membership to this forum. Any ideas on how to limit member access without closing the forums to potential AD users?

It should be possible to write a crawler to visit the member linked pages and parse the text for key words that will result in the link being removed. Users that think there site was removed in error can e-mail for a human review of the site link. Also, perhaps an address or pm box where users can report such activity to the forum admins.

Re: Spurious 'Members'

This isn't just happening on this forum. There is at least one non-CAD forum that I am a member of that has been getting 'spammed' by various 'new members'. I have no idea how they get in. I can only imagine that 'spambots' are getting more sophisticated. I guess this is just one more thing for administrators and moderators to deal with.

I frankly look forward to the day when the Internet can be better regulated and 'spamming' is illegal. It boggles the mind to think of the time and resources that are devoted to blocking it.

It appears that the members with questionable websites have been removed from the member list. Alibre is looking into how those members were created and will work on a solution to keep out those intruders.

If you notice any more, please point them out.
