Useful tip when using a 3D Mouse

If you select an edge or surface, and click-hold both right and left mouse buttons, one can orient the part round the selected edge/surface using the mouse.

What I discovered is that you can then also use a 3D Mouse to orient the part - far more easily - while still holding the right and left mouse button down. This is especially useful for zooming in and inspecting small features that are far away from the centre of mass.

Indeed. I discovered it by accident, too. Makes such a difference!

Worth reiterating that you do need to make a small drag movement with the mouse, after holding down L&R mouse buttons, before the new centre is activated (and available in the 3D mouse). Normally, it's difficult not to do this though!
