We are looking into alternatives. And we're looking for customer input. Can you describe your workflow? What kinds of STL files do you use? Are they organic like a scan or mechanical? Where do they come from? How do you modify them?
Thanks!
Max,
Speaking only for myself, I use Moment of Inspiration a lot. I really need OBJ import, as well as other formats that MOI can export to so that I can open them up in Alibre, and vice versa. There are certain things that MOI does very well, and things that Alibre does very well and its critical for the two programs to be able to "talk" to each other. I'm one of the people who got into MOI back when it was marketed with Alibre before the Geomagic days, so the support really is necessary. Actually, this is a real pie in the sky idea, but maybe 3DM support could be included? That way, the two programs could really talk the same language! That would also make interoperability with Rhino users that much better.
I also would like to see a robust STL import capability. As a fine scale modeler (add ons for airplane and ship models, sci-fi designs etc.), we often pass our STL files amongst ourselves. Some STL files are available for purchase on places like Ebay. However, we can't open and scale them, for example, in Alibre, let alone edit them. The current STL import capability rarely works, and then on only the simplest of designs, and I'm rocking a nice Core I7 with plenty of RAM and a dedicated Nvidia graphic card. Most of these STL imports are of the mechanical nature, but a few are organic shapes like airfoils and ship hulls. Being able to import STL and other mesh files and then save them as native Alibre files would be the ultimate cat's meow.
I really want to support Alibre and Atom looks very interesting. However, until a robust and reliable mesh import system is included I can't buy it. I'll stick with my older, long unsupported copies of Alibre that can import from MOI, Rhino, etc. I'll be blunt - the sooner mesh import capabilities are included, the faster I'll buy.
Thank you for listening, and I hope to be able to buy a copy of Atom for my traveling laptop soon!
