Exploded View Guide

Is there a guide on how to use the manual explode tool, I have no idea why things wont move in a certian direction but then I click off them and come back and they will. I see that they can follow XYZ based on the pointer but sometimes they just refuse to go a way I've selected.

Try select the 'move along' axis on the 'pointer'. It should highlight that axis (I think it turns yellow iirc)
