Fast B-Size printer/plotter

I'm in the market for a A/B-size plotter to replace an HP ColorPro CAD. HP is trying not to support this model anymore and the latest estimate to fix it is above $500.

HP is focusing on photo, not CAD. Epson is the same way. I have no info on Lexmark or Brother. OCE is not ruled out either.

I'm looking for any info on any fast (used to make check-plots) of a table-top sized A/B printer.

Scott,

I have an old A-size HP pen plotter that I'd sell cheap, including a bunch of paper and pens.

IMHO, you'd be better off to consider one of the large format (13x19) inkjet printers from HP or Epson or even a used HP inket plotter. I have an HP 1220 that works well with Alibre. The current models are probably $400 or so.

The inkjet plotters show up pretty often on Ebay and I was able to get a 36" wide HP 488CA for around $650 by being patient. It came with the stand, roll feed, paper tray, and automatic paper cutter and supplies are still available. It also works well with Alibre (XP Pro system).

Robert,

Make me a reasonable offer and it's yours (shipping extra, at whatever the shipper charges). It will include about 5 packs of paper, 1 pack of transparencies, and a bunch of pens, most still in the sealed packs.

Looks like you are in Canada and USPS seems to have decent rates from the US and doesn't screw you over on brokerage/customs fees, or at least so I've heard.

Email me at michalehenry@msn.com if you want to pursue this or need pics.

Hi Robert,

I've had really good luck with the A/B size DeskJets -- previously a 1220C (or something like that), and now a cp1700 ($500 list - $450 street). They only had one paper tray, but it's very easy to load the 11 x 17 when you need it, even in a multi-user environment.

HP also has at least 3 models that do up to 13 x 19 in the $250-$400 (list) range, but I don't know anything about them.

In general, I prefer Canon printers with the 4 separate ink tanks because the ink cost is quite a bit less, but if you don't print a ton then that isn't such a big issue.

Good luck, and by all means let us know what you get and how you like it!

Regards,
Greg :D

I bought an old HP 4v off of ebay over a year ago for only $75. It is a laserjet and prints on letter or 11x17. You do have to get a tray to hold the 11x17 but that only cost me another $25. There are so many of these out there that replacement parts are easily had if necessary. Make sure to max out its memory too.
