Flat Panel (LCD) Review

I'm looking for users that have a flat panel monitor. Which one? How do you like it? Refresh rate, eye strain, ghost images, and all the good stuff? I'm looking into buying a 19" or 20" LCD, but haven't ever used one and the reviews and specs I read online are of very little help.

I don't have one, but essentially it is the same as a laptop screen, and a decent resolution laptop screen is very easy on the eye (zero flicker, and very sharp), and works well with CAD packages.

I use a SONY SDM-S81R 18" LCD and love it. It is very easy on the eyes, and is as clear as the Viewsonic CRT it replaced. I have however noticed that a quality cable and good video card are a must. One of my fellow workers has the same monitor but the video card he his running isn't of the best quality and it shows. His screen is blurry, I have switched the two monitors and they both are blurry when connected to his computer. Also, I tried adding an extension cable to mine, and immediately it was blurry.

Monitor extension cables are always a no-no. Anytime I've been forced to use one resulted in poor display quality. The display would be fuzzy and lots of ghost images (duplicate images slight offset from the original, not ghosting as in screen remnants when I rotate a part).

I'm looking at getting a 19" LCD also. I have narrowed it down to the Samsung SyncMaster 191T. Mainly because of price, quality and it has a DVI input. If anyone has any horror stories about this one let me know.

I just received a new Dell PC at work that came with their 19" LCD monitor. I'll be installing Alibre on it next week and can let you know how well it works.

I nabbed an NEC MultiSync LCD that wasn't being used here in the office, and I really like it. At lower resolutions it's fuzzy, but when I bumped it up to 1280x1024 it was quite nice. Zero complaints from me!

I decided to go with a Samsung SyncMaster 191T+. Very nice at it's native resolution of 1280x1024 powered by a QuadroFX 500.

I get the ocassional ghost that lasts for 1-2 seconds MAX. But usually I don't get any. That's only when I have lots of windows maximized.

FWIW, I have a fairly new Dell Optiplex PC at work with their 19" LCD and just upgraded to a new Dell XPS PC at home. I was happy enough with the 19" flat panel display at work to upgrade to the Dell 20" flat panel display for home.

I've just spent the day in Alibre at home and the 20" FPD is a pleasure to use. For some odd reason, though, the ATI Radeon 9800 XT display adapter really hoses up the display unless hardware acceleration is turned down to level 2 of 6 (almost all acceleration is turned off). It doesn't seem to affect Alibre performance, though.
