hello, im new at this and have the program..,.i wanted to design a bike, how do i do it?

The vey best thing you can do is to start by going through all of the Alibre tutorials. As you go through them, you should be able to see how to use Alibre to design your bike. I think by patiently going through the tutorials before you start designing with Alibre, you can save yourself from going down a lot of 'blind alleys', and save yourself a lot of time. This is especially true if you have never used parametric 3d design software before. (These are softwares that use the same methods of design as Alibre, such as SolidWorks, SolidEdge, Pro-Engineer, and Inventor.)

I am currently using Alibre to help me design a recumbent tricycle. I think a lot of us will be very interested in seeing how you make out with your bike design!

Good luck with your work.

There is even a tutorial on 3d sketch of a pipe. Do the tutorials and it will save you hours of trail and error.

What kind of bike?

I have 2 bike projects for next year - folding bike and electrically-assisted bike...

Maybe a good way to learn would be to reverse-engineer an existing bike?

You can work out the basic geometry in a 2D drawing, using constraints and the equation editor, before you start to design in 3D - sort of, 'do it yourself' version of this:http://www.bikeforest.com/CAD/index.php

PS. See here, too:http://www.alibre.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1820

I am also designing a recumbent trike and would be very interested in sharing info. Here is a .jpg of very early concepts. Could we find a place to discuss Alibre designed bikes, trikes and HPV's?
Edit: moved picture to binarys.

How about sharing models of bike parts? We could set up a library of bike parts in Alibre format....

Maybe we could get our own section on this forum?
Alibre CEO is interested in bikes, I think :)

Alternatively, I already have a Yahoo group that I never launched.

Bear in mind, that there is already a section in the Xpress forum for woodworking. From Alibre's point of view it could well be a plus - if people browsing the forum, for the first time, could see a section dedicated to something that they were interested in, and that AD was being used in this area....

Mibe, Scott Wertel and I are all moderators. But we cannot add to the forum, we can only suggest the changes to the administrator and to the Alibre team.

Edit PS: I like bikes, I like wood.

Specialist forums would make more sense if the Xpress forum was integrated into this one.... Anyway, I'm in favour of a section for designing and modeling cycles and motorbikes using Alibre.

PS Here's a good link for bike stuff: http://www.velovision.co.uk/

The Xpress community held a design contest, and the winner was an offroad 4 wheeler. The design is awsome and can be viewed here.

My vote would be for you bikers to hold your discussion in this forum. If traffic got heavy, maybe a special section would do. Just a thought

Forum Suggestion

It is good to see Alibre users interested in other users projects. To all of the moderators and administrators who are reading this, I suggest that a 'Design Projects' forum be added to the Alibre forums, rather than specialized design forums devoted to bike design, woodworking, etc. I recommend that this 'Design Projects' forum be used so that users can post information and pictures of various designs that they created in Alibre, and would like to discuss with other users. Not only would such a forum be a great resource for information and knowledge, but it would be a very good place for prospective Alibre users to see what the software is capable of.

I realize that the 'Binaries' forum allows users to make postings of their designs, but I have tended to think of the 'Binaries' forum as a place where users will post reference files related to specific questions about how to use Alibre. Besides, a forum called 'Design Projects' sounds a lot cooler and more interesting than one called 'Binaries'!

I emailed the administrator requesting just about what you suggest. Maybe you could do the same. Strength in numbers you know. Look at the top of the page and click on "Memberlist" for the admin email address.

If special interest forums are a step too far, I suggest two additional forums:

Design projects - for WIP and discussion of specialist techniques using AD.

Design gallery - for finished work only.
