Import colors with .stp file

I have an assembly that I want to treat as a single entity so I exported it as a step file, then reopened it. This works well except all the associated colors of the individual parts are lost and it is uniformly white. Is there a way to retain the colors, or is there another way to turn an assembly drawing into a single part?

the first question always has to be:
what are you expecting from turning an assembly into a single part ? / what is your intention to do so ?

If you need each part clearly, with its features, colors etc. use this assembly as a subassembly.
If you import a step or sat or whatever file, it is one solid part/feature which can have only one color.
