I have a design made by someone else and have the option to buy either the step or the Solidworks file
Since I'm paying which one is the better, if any of the 2 formats ?

As both formats come in as "dumb solids" there is no real difference except that a Solicworks format can be "reviewed" so long as you have access to a version of Solidworks that will open the file in question. That way you have access to the original Design Tree and Sketches.

I am not a mechanical designer nor am I in the business of doing so but it seems odd that they would not provide both at the same cost. I would mention that to them and explain to them that for future designs I would be lookin for a company that would provide both. It cost them absolutely nothing to generate the STEP file. Just MHO.
