Keyboard Shortcuts - deprecated

<Note> - Before Alibre Design has the ability to set custom shortcuts for every command, the shortcuts were sporadic, difficult to find, and not centrally located. As of Alibre Design 2011, all shortcuts are customizable and located within the customization window via Tools > Customize Shortcut Keys in any workspace.

Since space at the top of the forums is at a premium, I'm changing this topic from a Sticky to a normal thread.

<original post>

There are several keyboard shortcuts for Alibre design. Many, if not all are documented, but not conveniently located in one place. If you have a keyboard shortcut, or any keyboard and mouse combination to perform an action in Alibre Design, post it here.

Periodically the moderators will concatenate the thread into one easier to read post.

Shift Key and Circular Dimensions

Shift Key and Circular Dimensions

Posted by mrehmus

I was frustrated by AD's insistence on producing a radial dimension to the end view of a part that had a line across the drawn circle from side to side. A round bar with a step milled in the end is an example of a real-life part. Click on the circumference with the dimension tool and it generates a radius value. Press the Shift Key and then click on the circumference and it will generate the diameter value.

Editing a Part in its own Window

Editing a Part in its own Window .... from within an Assembly.

If you hold down the Shift key while choosing Edit-Part, the Part will open in its own Window. After editing, just close the Window (the Assembly Window is updated in real-time).

Ctrl + Wheel button pressed
This isn't genuin key controle though.

In Part/Assembly Ctrl+Wheel button show Advanced selector dialog.
In an assembly similar dialog which let you select part instead of faces.
The following procedure is shown at status bar.
Wheel up/down will let you select the items in the dialog, as well as the
spin button which appears on the part/assembly window does so.

I just accidentally found this, and I am still not get used to use it either.
But I would like to know how many of you are aware of already.
Thanks.

User-defined window size

User-defined window size (like save, insert and many others)

-> Open the window
-> fix the desired size of the window
-> press the "Ctrl" key and hold and close the window with X on the top right in the window.

We have test it with XP and Vista 32 bit.

Is this supposed to open a new window at the size you defined prior to closing it while holding down the Control key? I just tried it and it does not work for me. I have XP Pro.
I use Sizer anyway. (Some one here in the forum suggested it a while back. Sorry I don't remember who it was.) That way I can predefine the window sizes I want and they are just RMB menu click away. It's available here.

Ralf,

What is the procedure that you use to get this to work for you? I've tried it with Save As..., and Open... with no luck at all. With Open and with Save As, the new window opens "normally". As for the Equation Editor and the Save As and Open dialogs, my exprience is that they open in the same location they were closed the last time they were used in each session, without having to hold the Control key during close.

User-defined window size (like save as, insert and Eqation Editor ... )

It is a "WINDOWS" command.

-> Open the window
-> fix the desired size of the window
-> press the "Ctrl" key and hold and close the window with X on the top right in the window.

We have test it with XP and Vista 32 bit.

View Oriention Hot Keys

I haven't seen these hot keys listed anywhere. They work in part, assembly, and sheet metal work spaces:

Crtl+1 = Front
Ctrl+2 = Back
Ctrl+3 = Left
Ctrl+4 = Right
Ctrl+5 = Top
Ctrl+6 - Bottom
Ctrl+7 = Isometric

I stumbled upon them when I used the Ctrl+7 hotkey to set the iso view, thinking I was still in SolidWorks. Habit, you know.

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts

when you're in an assembly, you can
1- click&hold on a part and drag your mouse to move it
2-click&hold on a part, hold "shift" and drag your mouse to rotate it
3-click on one part, hold "shift", click on another part, and then let go of shift and then drag your mouse, you will now move/pan the group of parts across the 3d space
4-click on one part, hold "shift", then click on another part.... don't let go of shift, and you'll be able to rotate the group of parts in space

i wrote that up pretty quick, so hopefully you'll be able to figure it out

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts

Can't get this (previous post) to work. It always rotates view:

Part & Assembly Mouse Shortcuts

LMB + RMB (hold) - Pan View
LMB + >0.2s pause + RMB (hold) - Rotate View

But, if I hold Shift + LMB + RMB, I can get Pan View.

Re: Keyboard Shortcuts

I've taken all the shortcuts I could find and put them into an Excel spreadsheet (attached.) I haven't verified all of them, and I didn't include things that are feature of Windows rather than Alibre, such as alt-tab to change windows. I'm sure there are errors; it is what it is. Lesser used (for me) features like Repository and Team communications are not missing -- they are on a second sheet.

Lock or Unlock Multiple Configurations

Here is a method that I use to lock and unlock multiple configurations:

1. Select multiple configurations by using Shift+Left Click or Left Click on Configurations to select all configurations (configurations will be highlighted)
2. Point the mouse over the highlighted selection and press CTRL+Shift+Right Click
3. Select Lock or Unlock from the pop up menu

It would help is this were formatted as a PDF that would print out on (say) 8-1/2 X 11 paper in a convenient, ready to hang by your workstation, format. The basic Windows keys could be omitted (we all know them don't we) and the focus would be on Alibre specific commands.
