Is keyshot 2 completely independant ie do I uninstall version 1 before installing version 2 or I leave things as they are and run v2 as an update?

They are independent and separate. KeyShot V1.9x can run on same computer as KeyShot V2. No need to uninstall.
You can also have hypershot V1.9x and Shot coexisting on same computer with KeyShot.

How Uman says, both work independently.

In other cases, I personally recommend always (Windows):
- Uninstall,
- Clean up (Ccleaner) or similar...
- Installing the new version/build/release...

(With Linux and OS X not necessary, in most cases)
