lofting strategies/issues

I was wondering what criteria makes for a good loft between 2 sketches. Attached is an example of 2 simple sketches that we thought would loft easily, but odd twisting artifacts occurred, I went on later to fix it with a loft-cut feature that fixed the part, but I was wondering what strategies are best used
when creating sketches to loft.
Thanks

as in the most cases it is wise to split into different features
keep each sketch as simple as possible

yes, I can :)
but this doesn't help you ...

I have lofted the 2 circles, then loft-cut the groove, then the fillet
