What hardware to buy?

Ralf,

thanks for the reply. in your tests, there does not seem to be much difference opening files or going to drawing mode, How about rotating the assembly, any difference between the two machines there? The laptop I am leaning towards is A sony f series with i7 740 qm and nvidea geeforce 310m with 512 discrete video memory.

John,

There is no difference in rotation speed.
I think the Sony i7 740QM with a GeForce 310M is is a good choice. :)

I need to upgrade my computer system while keeping the upcoming 2011 release in mind. Looking to go to Windows 7 64 bit. As usual funds are always a factor. Thinking i7-860. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Me too, I want to invest in a desktop that is going to cope with AD for the next three years or so, I would rather spend a little more now and make it reasonably future proof.

I always like a Sony vaio laptop. The new Vaio laptop reportedly has an 8-inch LED back light screen with 1,600-by-768-pixel resolution and a 1.33GHz Intel processor The computer, according to the site, has an 8-inch LED back light screen with 1,600-by-768-pixel resolution. Other snippets, including a 1.33GHz Intel processor, Vista Home Premium or Home Basic, and the choice of a hard-disk drive up to 60GB or a 128GB solid-state disk. more powerful mini laptop wouldn't be competing with net books on price, but likely targeting that portion of the market attracted by the small size of net books but needs a more powerful platform. This type hardware feature also support the all the games.

I have this only to play with the web, which ended up with good performance with Alibre too.

Just for your information.

Core i5 ATI whatever the card there.
Win 7 64bits 4G memory.
No fancy gadget. Nothing special, but Alibre rocks, quite efficiently.
I haven't tested yet with the biggest model I have for 2D performance, but I expect this might be fine.
100,000Yen.

Just doing my research on the matter and found two great article and had to share it with my fellow alibre users. Do not throw your money away on icore7 where and icore5 will do the job. Check out articles!!!!

2 Generation icore 5 processors:

1 Generation icore 5 processors:

Off the shelf computers with icore 5 processors:

2nd Gen: http://www.gateway.com/systems/series/529598185.php
1st Gen: http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668616.php

I am would probably go with the 2nd generation processor since its only 20 bucks more than the 1 generation. I might even just build my own with the Core i5-2500K since it has 3.8Ghz of turbo boost for 1 core. This is perfect for alibre (and common in most 3d programs) since it only taxi's 1 core/1 thread at a time. I will post my final system when finished.

One thing to bear in mind is that Keyshot comes bundled with Alibre, and there the i7 will blow the i5 away. :!:

I would agree however I do not use keyshot or other rendering programs. In the past I said I5 however the I7 keeps up with all the multi-tasking I do on 2 24" monitors. Sometimes I will open two instances of alibre to get my work done quicker. I also use other 2D/3D programs at the same time (AutoCAD 2010, Fabriwin), all windows office programs (outlook, word, etc) and manufacturing software (M1). The I7 keeps up!

I will also state that the laptop is noticably slower than the desktops, however it will still get the job done.

Below are 3 comupters I run Alibre Expert and have very good success with performance:

Modified Inspiron 1520 Home Laptop:
-Basic Specs - Win 7 64 bit - 180 SSD - 4GB Ram - 256 MB Nvida Graphics - 2.2Ghz Core 2 Duo

Modified Alienware Aurora R3 Home Desktop:
-Basic Specs - Win 7 64 bit - 2x 120 GB SSD (RAID 0) - 8GB Ram - ATI HD 6900 SERIES Graphics - 3.4Ghz Core I7

Custom Made Desktop:
-Basic Specs - Win 7 64 bit - 160 GB SSD - 16GB Ram - ATI HD 5400 SERIES Graphics - 3.4Ghz Core I7
