You don't have to be in edit mode for any of the sketches. You can initiate the Sweep outside of a sketch mode, then select the sketches from the Design Explorer or from the workspace, as long as you have sketch visibility toggled On.

In fact, if you watch most of the Alibre Training Tutorials, they generally illustrate exiting sketch mode, by clicking on the Select icon, before selecting any of the feature creation tools. I picked up the habit of selecting the feature creation tool while still in sketch mode from my work with SolidWorks and it has served me well, so far.
