Just to clarify, do you understand the difference between creating a Boolean in the Assembly space and doing a Boolean Feature in the Part space?

Why?
You should try starting a new part and put your entire assembly in that part as a Boolean Unite feature as the first feature. It will look similar but will update with changes then.
Honestly Alibre should rework the Assembly Boolean to work this way with a non-default option to make a dumb solid.

You're right, I don't *need* to do the Boolean in an assembly.
But even the Boolean in the part workspace loses the ability to constrain internal parts/feature/geometry and colors/materials.
It's annoying that all of those things are there when you edit the Boolean, but vanish as soon as you complete the edit.
