Great! Thanks for checking that eron. So, you could use a keyboard macro to control an animation with a normal spring in it. That should do what Old Geeser wants. Much simpler than complex spring assemblies... Well done.

Ok that makes sense. Another thing I realized is that each spring would have to be a separate model, not just a duplicate instance. That way each spring can reference its own piston/valve for the correct length.
