I uploaded an example of swept tubing to the files section, it's
named "sept_curve.stp".
Hope this helps.

Your example is good, however, have you had any success trying to
create the weep path in 3 dims? So far everything that I have seen
has only been on one plane.

You can create a spline path in 3D (by using the "from file" option, in
which you specify a 3D path with x,y,z coords..

However if you want to create your pipe with straights and radiuses (like a
real pipe) you need to do it in one plane at a time.

FW: [Alibre Design] Another quick polygon method

Auto forwarded by a Rule

Hi all,

Here's an alternative method to draw a polygon of any number of
faces. Description is a bit long, but the actual thing is quick and
totally parametric:

1) Draw a circle using reference geometry.

2) Sketch your polygon with N lines around the circle. Size or
appearance is not important at this point. TIP: Hold down ctrl+shift
while sketching the lines so AD wont inferr any constraints or snap
to grid.

3) Drag your lines so all of them are close to being tangent with
the circle at their mid points. Precision is not so important, just
get them close.

4) Use the tangent constraint to make them tangent to the circle.
The only catch is not to let them become colinear. If step 3 was
done well enough, it wont be a problem.

5) At this point you have an irregular parametric poligon. You can
modify the circle's diameter or dimension any side.

6) If you need it to be a regular polygon (most cases), apply the
equal constraint to all sides (using the shift key will allow you to
constrain all sides in one step).

7) This will result in a non-dimensioned, parametric polygon. You
may now dimension the whole thing in one step by:

a) Dimension the circle
b) Dimension one side
c) Dimension from one vertex to the center of the circle
d) Dimension between opposite vertex or sides

I hope this is useful!

Gaspar

Did you look at the Intake Tube.stp in the files section? That uses
multipule planes.

FW: [Alibre Design] Drawing wires, selcting nodes and the mi

Subject: [Alibre Design] Drawing wires, selcting nodes and the middle button of the mouse
Auto forwarded by a Rule

I'm following the thread about drawing wires and I'm trying to use
the described
techniques. I tried to create a few hortogonal planes and draw a few
3D lines and I just
ran across a couple of strange "problems":

1) It looks like you have to use the middle mouse button to select a
node or a line in the
workspace. Unfortunately, my mouse has just two buttons. Is it
possible to set alibre up
in order to use a two buttons mouse?

BTW: I checked the system prerequisites and I did not find any clue
of such a
requirement. Maybe that document has to be fixed.

2) I tried to use the advanced selector, as well (right button
mouse). Unfortunately, it
looks like Alibre does not see any of the nodes (points) I just
created to define the
position of my new plane in the 3D space. When I switch from the
sketch environment
(2D) to the workspace (3D) my nodes just seem to disappear. I do not
see any clue of
them ever in the design explorer.

BTW: Design explorer does not list any point/node but a single center
of a circle. Is this
normal? Should it list _all_ nodes created by the user, instead?

Any suggestion?

Is it just me or there is a problem in downloading files from
the "files" section of this Yahoo group?

I tried several times to download the example files that a few Alibre
users have kindly made available on Yahoo and I have got either
a "permission denied" or "file unavailable" error message.

To mess the situation up a little bit more, I do succeded in
downloading three files (egg.stp, inlet vanes.stp and radial
hole.stp) while I still have problems downloading the other ones.

Is there a file-specific permission problem I'm unable to spot?

Thanx

PS: Yes, I did read the section of the Yahoo help devoted to this
topic...

No, the middle mouse button is not used to select nodes or lines. A 3 button mouse is not required. The only real benefit to a 3 button mouse is that a lot of them have scroll wheels in the middle button which can be used to zoom in and out.

If you have created nodes while in sketch mode, then yes, they are not visible out of sketch mode. They are only to be used to define and constrain objects in that particular sketch. For points to be used in the part mode, you can pick “Insert Point…”. They will then show up in the design explorer, and can be used to define axes, planes, etc.

I have an invention and have completed the design using Alibre
Design. The product is an injection molded part (relatively small
and inexpensive) that will market to consumers through retail
shops. The potential market is huge. I have no experience in
marketing a product and am looking for a manufacturer with ties to
get this product to market. If anyone can point me in a direction
please email me at my sideline business (Candoris Mechanical Part
Designs) at candoris-at-comcast-dot-net (spelled out the email
address or Yahoo Groups will cut it off).

Thanks in advance.

John

PS: Thank you to Alibre for putting such a powerful CAD tool in the
hands of us that can't afford to spend thousands per year! I thank
you every day.

find it adequate?

Has anyone used any of the other PDF writers on the market that they
feel are particularly good and priced reasonably, like deskPDF,
Win2PDF, etc.?

I've used the cheap version of win2pdf to create pdfs of Solid Edge
files. GD&T symbols did not translate. I don't know if the more
expensive ("professional") one would handle those graphics.

I've also used 5D pdf from CTRL+P. Not bad, but not enough control
over the resolution, font embedding, and the like. I also think it
only pdf'd one sheet at a time, even in multi-sheet drawings. I might
as well make tiff images instead.

And, I've used Adobe Distiller. Nothing special for the cost when it
comes to making pdf's of drawings, since a drawing pdf is usually just
a static image file in a convenient format. The lower cost
alternatives work just fine for drawings. Now, if I wanted to be able
to red-line a pdf, or allow users to add text to it (form fields), or
prevent a user from saving the pdf locally or even printing the pdf, I
would definitely pay the bucks for the Adobe version. I don't think
the freebies have that functionality in them. Truthfully, though, I
only know that Adobe has that functionality, I'm not overly familiar
with how to set those options.

I now use PDF995 with no problems at all.

I use a couple of the freebies, with fairly good results (WinPDF and
one other that uses ghostscript from a German company (MAST) but it
is no longer free to download, 10 EUR) http://pdf-tool.e-
hosting24.net/c_11-l_en.html .

You can search pdf writers and other info on http://www.pdfzone.com

Although it is not pdf, I have downloaded the Autodesk DWF Writer
and Viewer. I used it once on a drawing and it did not do as
claimed. There were some drawing labels and such that did not come
through on the viewer correctly.

If you are looking to add in a pdf writer to Alibre... that would be
great. Let us know if we should post test drawings.

One other thing to keep in mind for down the road... ASME Y14.41
requires that the drawing be able to be queried when using the
digital product definition method (model+drawing). Outputs such as
pdfs, tif, cgm, etc don't meet the std. It would take the native
CAD or a very smart Viewer.
