3D Design Makes Linn Audio Speakers Solid as a Rock

The lights dim, the screen flickers, the THX logo appears on the screen, and you hear that wonderful rich sound from your home theater speakers. If Linn Audio of New Hampshire builds your set of speakers, then you are in for a real treat. These speakers tower at 7 feet tall and have the most crystal-clear sound you have ever heard. How does Linn Audio create such amazing audio components? It begins with a passion for the clean sound of the high-fidelity experience coupled with 45 years of expertise building and engineering custom sound systems

The Linn Audio speaker system is the culmination of decades of research and development, as well as countless hours of expert and critical listening. The founder of Linn Audio, David Linn, has a lifetime of experience with high-end audio equipment, having worked in the audio industry starting way back in 1965 when he was a sales rep for JBL.

Mr. Linn has not forgotten the design principles and objectives of the JBL engineers. He utilizes many of these same principles today. The Reference Granite system’s design pulls from the classic JBL principles, including large, paper cone woofers with 4″ voice coils and a mid-range horn with a large compression driver. Mr. Linn has since had training as an Electrical Engineer and has applied all his engineering training and expertise, as well as a lifetime of listening and enjoying high-end stereo, to the development of his speaker systems

The Passion for Perfection

Mr. Linn has an obsession with eliminating distortion in his systems. He has done everything conceivable to minimize or eliminate distortion from the Linn Audio line of speakers. There is no such thing as “zero distortion,” especially in speakers, but Mr. Linn believes that his speaker designs come as close as can be found in the high-end speaker market, regardless of price. “Transparency” is a word that he also uses to describe his speaker designs. In other words, nothing gets in the way of the music, and it is as close as you can get to the original performance.

After researching different ways to make the speaker cabinets and visiting with dozens of cabinet makers, Mr. Linn decided that he would have to create the custom speakers himself, mostly because his unique design could not be made using traditional hand tools. After buying a CNC machine, he found Alibre Design online and starting using the free trial, to make what he calls the “asymmetric hexagon” design of the cabinet. “I like how in Alibre Design you can draw a rough sketch of the part you need to make and then go back and dimension it to exact specifications,” Linn says. He constructed the inner cabinets with multi-layered Medite MDF, then cross-braced and glued under pressure to eliminate any resonance. After building the panels, he applies high-end wood grain finishes that a customer can customize for the interior design elements of the home theater.

All parts of every speaker, cabinet materials, drivers, crossover components, wiring, damping materials, are selected for sonic quality. Linn Audio selects all drivers for their sonic merits and construction quality. All crossover components are constructed to eliminate any distortion, and Linn Audio sources every crossover component from premium parts suppliers. Internal wiring is audiophile quality from the best manufacturers of silver conductor wire, and connections are point-to-point, soldered with silver solder. The result is a beautiful piece of furniture and sounds to satisfy the most demanding music lover. The systems are all completely handmade, in the USA.
